Chapter 18

She was doing what he had asked her to do, pilot the Moorea. Karly’s display had not been a slight against him. Warrick knew her better than that. It was the shock of finding her dressed in his clothes at the top of the mast, but then, he had met her dressed in men’s clothes.

Warrick clasped the railing tightly. It should have occurred to him she would be thorough. She said she was good. He really had no complaint. As for Wreck, the man had been surprisingly quiet since Karly’s departure. He wouldn’t even look at him. Wreck could have stopped her, but didn’t. No doubt, one of his tests by fire that had worked, thank God.

The crew had the right to test her, and she had the right to prove herself. His nerves might not survive, but he had the feeling Karly would. Of course, before he saw her, he needed to gain control of his frustration. He was powerless in this process. He helped Trent check the cargo, inspected the riggings on the front sail, visited the hold, and reviewed the supplies. Karly had not returned, but his frame of mind had improved.

It was time to go and find her, to check her hand or kiss her, whichever came first. But with each step, his frustration returned. What would he do if the challenges escalated? He could not stand and watch her risk her life in a game of wills. He halted in front of the great cabin. Perhaps he was not ready to approach her. He could wait until she emerged. She might want to speak to him then, and the conversation would go better. Unfortunately that could be in front of the crew, which would make matters worse. He drew a long breath and was about to turn around when he heard a crash. The handle wouldn’t budge. From the other side, he heard a man’s voice angry and low.

Warrick kicked, and the molding splintered. A second kick and it shattered. Torrents of papers, files, and charts blurred the room into a picture of disarray. He saw it all in an instant, including the man dressed in white kneeling over a bundle of material, but he moved on to the chestnut hair. Bile rose in his throat as he recognized an unconscious Karly. “Landgon,” he growled.

Landgon rose slowly, the knife glinting his hand, and let Karly slide to the floor. “I warned you she was a mistake.”

It was possible to break the man’s neck with a single blow. Warrick flexed his fingers in anticipation. “She is my mistake to make. What the hell are you doing here?” She might still be alive. Landgon had been crouched over her, but he might not have finished. Karly may have been at Landgon’s feet, but her life was at his. To win this encounter, Warrick had to lull Landgon into a sense of security and power.

“Grown on you, has she? I have to admit, you have done nicely with her.
